Firstly, are you sure its the lifter/cam? It might be the rocker arms. Sound very similar. You can fix those by popping off the valve covers and cleaning the rocker shafts. Also, at the same time check if the lifters wiggle at all if you move them. If they do, tighten the rocker arms and see if the noise goes away. Doesn't need much -a half turn at a time, then start the engine to see if the noise diminishes.
If it is the lifter, you're in for a big job-you really need to replace them AND the cam - new lifters and dodgy old cam will kill those new lifters before you can say 'I wonder whether i should have replaced the cam at the same time'. Buy a Haynes manual and adjust them with the correct gap using a feeler gauge. Take tappet cover off, undo locking screw and adjust nut to the correct gap.
