I had that happen to a Kia I had..I took it to the deal,and they ran a test on her,and found out it was a censer chip..They put a new one in,and the engine light when off..

There is a fault code associated with the check engine light. Need that code to help you. However, bad oxygen sensors are at the top of the list for why a car fails emissions or bad 3 way catalyst (cat).
Drive by any good parts store and they will read your code for free. After you have the code identified (which will probably be oxygen sensor) replace faulty part have codes cleared and make sure you run your vehicle at highway speeds to clear out the exhaust before having your emissions test.
