Should I buy a new Land Rover Defender or wait for the Iveco Massif to be launched in the UK?

Just as above (and J.G a very reliable and informative person) Ivecos are awful, awful things. Hopelessly unreliable, terribly built and a waste of space. A Defender is a fairly old fashioned and acquired vehicle but pretty well built and awesome off road.

I've just been on Iveco's site, it looks a piece of crap to be honest. It has all round leaf springs, and I've driven Iveco vans with the 3.0 engine - they are horrendous on fuel %26amp; very unreliable.
If you need a Defender because of work %26amp; towing, I'd stick with it or try a Japanese vehicle, but I'd give the Iveco a wide berth.

I bought a Land Rover discovery in May. We paid what the retail value is currently. The trade in value online is 7-8 thousand less than the retail ( which I know happens) but we have been offered less than 1/2 of the retail because " no one wants them" Any suggestions on where to sell it other than local paper? ANyone used Ebay? We would like to get at least what book trade in value is for it!! It has become our 2nd car, so we want to get rid of the payment, since we don't use it much now. HELP! We want to get the most we can out of it, but want to sell it %26amp; not let it sit.What is up with Land Rover?

If its the heat shield that's rattling then its okay, if not and the rattling in inside the converter it needs replaced. This can be checked and usually a muffler shop will do it for free. 1998 Land Rover Discovery Power Seats and Radio Not Working?
On my 98 Disco both the passenger and driver side seats arent working. I couldn't locate a fuse for it but I noticed a bunch of relays under neath driver side seat. Could one of them control the power seats. If so, which one?
Also my radio is not turning on at all. I do even see the clock displaying on it. Is there a fuse behind the radio? Because I checked the fuse under the dash and that was fine.1998 Land Rover Discovery Power Seats and Radio Not Working?

Discoverys are crap. My father has owned two and neither of them are any good. Always something breaking down on them. 4 Runners are 1,000 times better. I remember a popular car magazine calling the Land Rover Discovery "The truck that will get you there, but might not get you back." The prices on the Discovery are attractive but there's a reason for their super low resale value. They aren't reliable and their parts are very expensive. Have you driven it yet? It feels like the front seats are too close to the doors. The 4 Runner is kinda narrow too but at least it has enough shoulder room for anyone. Still, the 4 Runner would get my nod.
Update: In response to another answer, the Discovery should be more luxurious. It was costing $50,000 when the 4 Runner was $30,000. However, look at the prices now. Look at what 2003 models are selling for. The 4 Runner only costs 2-3000 less to buy. That's a big difference from $20,000 brand new. And you are going to have to find out if the drive line and front and rear ends are tough enough to use with that engine. As far as finding used engines auto dismantle rs are often hooked up to a hot line for parts, Its best if you have a working relation ship with an auto dismantler for example like a local shop that buys a lot of parts. The dismantler is going to make sure he gets a good quality engine and tranny and computer and electrical harness necessary. Because they do not want to lose the shops business. If you go in off the and are just being a collection of parts, its a lot more easy to get taken advantage off if you do not know what you are doing, and who you are doing business with.

The LR3 does not require "foreign" oil. I suspect your friends are somewhat clever and were making a joke at your expense, considering that the LR3 is an SUV. If they were not making a joke, and they actually believe you have to import motor oil for that engine, than I suspect they are not clever at all.
Land Rover does not use anything special in their engines. As a matter of fact, even the modern Land Rover engine likes to keep things simple. The dealers strongly suggest you keep that in mind, and as such they recommend oil weights that are very common around town.
No matter what that manual says, you can bet it will ask for something that is easy to get just about anywhere. Just avoid taking it to Jiffy Lube, unless you bring your own oil.
This is not because you need special oil, this is because the stuff they actually keep around is absolute crap. You may as well go to Advance Auto, O'Reilly, Carquest, Napa or Autozone and get the proper weight and a good brand. They WILL have what you need. Land Rovers aren't made of faerie dust, you don't have to bless the oil and dip it in the waters of the river Styx for it to work. It just has to be the right viscosity, and that is all.
As for working on the vehicle, many Land Rover owners take pleasure in doing their own work. If this isn't the case for you, have no fear. The bits that make Land Rovers tick operate on the same principals that all other vehicles do. The only difference in a Land Rover is that the parts are larger, and require more regular maintenance.
This is where people get the wrong idea about Land Rovers. People think that more service equals bad reliability. This is not the case.
Normal vehicles are designed to last for about 150,000 miles. They generally go a bit longer, but they are basket cases at that point. Ready for the junk yard at the big 200.
Land Rovers are designed to last indefinitely. This being the case, you are expected to take better care of them, so the parts will keep on working properly for years to come. The parts are designed to be serviced, and if they are not serviced, they will fail.

As an example, on the Discovery II, the owner is capable of actually lubricating the blower motor bearings for the climate control system. From start to finish, it takes about 5 minutes. Try THAT on a Chevrolet.

it would be really spendy, I would try locating a used motor, with low miles, and have a certified land mech put it in. Is it the 4.0 v8 and did the head gasket go? If so just rebuild the heads, and replace the gaskets, and go through the top end, as long as the crank and pistons are good, you can save money that way as well. Depends on whether your crank and pistons are still good. I just spent $325 on a rebuild kit from carquest for a '91 Chevy 350. Rings, bearings, gaskets, etc. Turns out we needed to get the cylinders boared (sp?) and replace the pistons. Ended up being $550 by the end. We did the work ourselves. The cheapest replacement engine we found was $500 and it needed to be rebuilt anyway so in the long run it was cheaper to rebuild the damn thing. Carquest was cheapest. Try them.mini maine weather

That 5 percent needs to be more like 10 percent, or even 15-20, in order for Land Rover to survive comfortably. Either that, or they have to raise their prices, which wouldn't be good for them.

It could also be a bent wheel, a thrown wheel weight (I use to have this happen all the time on my Cherokee with alloy wheels but never on my Sammi with steel wheels), debris stuck in the wheel (ice, snow, mud, a rock even) (an ice clot scared the heck out of me in the Sammi once), or a bad shock.
I've seen weird problems with trac control that would pulse one wheel so I guess antilock brakes could do the same thing. We found the trac problem when the tire showed wear.

If it wobbles very bad even when starting to move at parking-lot speeds, that might be serious. Usually that means that the tire is coming apart and has gotten "lumpy", and should be replaced IMMEDIATELY before it blows.

I have a TD5 Land Rover Discovery in the cold weather the car has failed to start on a few occasions but every now and again it starts no problem, plus the alarm has been playing up also, going off on its own now and again.
I thought Glow Plugs, Battery tested to be ok, shorting alarm. battery earth shorting, maybe not starting cos of the immobiliser...

2000 Dodge Durango OR 2000 Land Rover Disovery Series II?
I'm a single mom of 4 kids, looking for a used 7 passenger vehicle that is not a van. I have driven both and love the discovery, but i also like the durango, however durangos are everywhere! Both used vehicles have about 90,000K on them but are in my current price range. I know their gas milage is similar. Anyone out there that has owned one or the other or better yet both? I have heard Land rovers are great and that they are crap - who knows the truth? I have driven 3 Discoverys from 1997 - 2002 and for some reason i just absolutely loved each of them - not sure why. My choice would be Land Rover. Dodge Durangos are so common, plus their styling has something to be desired. Land Rover does have a bit of prestige that the Durango does not have. I haven't owned either but I have known 2 people that have owned Land Rover and 1 person that owned a Durango. The Land Rover owners absolutely love theirs and the Durango owner seemed to just like it and what I mean is that the Durango owner didn't rave over his vehicle like the Land Rover owners did. It will be your vehicle and it will be your choice, so get either because both will make for nice vehicles but the Land Rover is a step above the Durango. Well, a guy I used to work with had a Dodge Durango. He was spending about $300 a month in GAS, that's $75 a week. That's horrible. I pay a little more than that for a car payment. :P
I know you want something used, but I would seriously go to a Hyundai dealership and check out their Santa Fe's. I'm sure you could get the older body style 2006 model for a good price.
The new style Santa Fe, you can buy a third row to seat 7 people.
Anyway, these are really nice cars and you get a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty and they have GREAT resale value.

I own a 2003 Land Rover Discovery Series II and I love it. The maintenance will cost more, and at the mileage you are describing it will come sooner rather than later. When I hear Durangoes that are a few years old the engine sounds rougher to me. You say you love the Discovery...then that's your answer! :-) Good luck!

Any ideas why my Land Rover Discovery doesn't start sometimes?
It does this unexpectedly maybe once a month, both when it hasn't been driven and when it has recently been driven. You can turn the key and the power works but nothing happens. Then if you wait like 5 minutes, it'll start. Any ideas how I can diagnose and fix this myself...Any ideas why my Land Rover Discovery doesn't start sometimes?
The discovery has a main ground cable problem that is quite simple to repair. The connection in question is on the right frame rail inside the wheel well, behind the body mount. Remove the cable from the frame and polish the end with sandpaper then reinstall. There are 3 other possibilities. Battery terminals, solenoid or the safety neutral switch. Disconnect and clean the battery terminals when you do the frame ground.If this doesn't do the trick, next time it happens, shift the trans. in neutral from park and try starting it. If it cranks, it's the switch. Another test is to connect a test light to the small wire on the starter solenoid and turn the key during a no-crank moment. If the tester lights up, it's the starter solenoid.Any ideas why my Land Rover Discovery doesn't start sometimes?

There are a few things in the starting circuits of the Disco
Such as starter relay, ignition switch, if it is automatic then inhibitor switch, starter solenoid (built into starter motor) and lastly wireing connections.
Any of these could be at fault. If it is automatic try putting it in and out of park , this will move the inhibitor switch. If this works you will need to replace this switch.
The starter relay is not that expensive. It may be worth replacing this to see if it solves the problem.
My personal feeling is that the starter motor is starting to wear out and it may well be time for an overhaul or replacement. This could work out expensive so get it checked out before going down this route.
Sorry I have no definite answer for you.

I'll say this: You're buying used. It's going to be cheap and have high mileage. Look up the part costs for land rovers. Now take the purchase price (should be around 6k in most areas) and multiply times .5 (50%) that's the repair that you'll pay in the first year and a half (maybe sooner). The real cost of buying the car is 9k. If you can't afford that additional 3k now and don't save cash for that period it's just going to sit in your driveway and you'll be at home watching reruns of judge judy.
Buy a honda or toyota 4 cylinder (or acura). They ain't sexy but it won't leave you stranded and they're cheap and easy to fix.

Does anyone have a land rover freelander?
i have just bought a land rover freelander r reg 69,000 miles on it i bought it for 拢2500its a 5 door station wagon what do u think?Does anyone have a land rover freelander?
Hi i looked into buying a Freelander but was put off by the reports of cylinder head gasket failure on the 1.8 petrol if yours is petrol get it checked out,if its the diesel it will be the early Land rover diesel which is a bit rough+unreliable,the newer td4 diesel had a BMW engine which is much better,don't want to sound negative,but hope you've got a good one.Does anyone have a land rover freelander?

I work at a motor factors and we sell loads of headgasket sets and head bolts for the rover K series engine.
It will need changing at some point.

take to your local tire shop for a recommendation, not a chain store but a real shop as they can help you select the correct size that will give you the necessary clearances. remember you will need to recalibrate your speedometer.

No, but you could fit a 300 series Discovery R380 gearbox %26amp; transfer unit. It's a lot of work, as the S3 tunnel is narrow. I'm afraid bloody awful %26amp; crap gearboxes are part %26amp; parcel of Land Rover ownership.

Hummm, that was a 215 all aluminum V-8, originally an Oldsmobile part..... Any swap would involve more then just the engine. But, there was a diesel option that year, how about an oil burner ?? There are enough Land Rovers around that I'm sure there's some current info on transplants - do a 'net search ??

Call autozone and price it I just changed mine mine was like $600. The oil pan gasket was $30. Drain the oil drop the oil pan and take out the bolts you switch out the funnel sreen looking thing bolt the new one on put sealeant on the gasket put back the oil pan. I know for a fact that the Land Rover Defender gets down and dirty anytime, anywhere I've seen that one perform off road and I was not disappointed. But about the Disco I and II and my personal favorite the Range Rover (4.6 HSE to be exact), are they as capable off road?? Or have they progressively lost their off road heritage due to market demand. Opinions?? Videos?? Fact?? Assumptions??

Land rover series 2 1961 alternator dynamo?
I have got a 1961 landrover which has had the dynamo replaced with an alternator by a someone. I am having problems with the battery running flat. I have got the Haynes manual but the wiring digrams are not very clear. The one with the alternator shows an earth and 2 other wires, are these both live? What does the voltage stabiliser look like and where would it fit? The diagrams show a resistor in the heater plug circuit where does that go? Secondly,many dynamos were changed to alternator and sometimes left a redundant wire HAVE you connected this thinking its fallen off Second,when you know the battery is charged Park up but pull off the alt wires If it starts next day ok you know the alternator has got a fault If this is not the case,with battery charged,remove the battery earth lead and touch the terminal on and off Are you gettin g sparks IF YOU ARE disconnect things one by one on an elimination basis until hopefully you have solved the problem A common thing with older faithfulls is Has it got a tow bar wiring socket.These tend to corrode and short circuit One last thing is the resistor gets weak and bangs to much power to the glow plugs and burns them out The LR system is one glow plug down there all down.Series or parallel Hope its been of some use and i did all the land rover courses series iia on When i had my own garage i specialised in rover triumph freight rover and land rover Hope your lucky gLand rover series 2 1961 alternator dynamo?

You need to buy the radiator hose made for your vehicle. Most have bends and twists that will not tolerate replacement with generic hose. You can buy a replacement hose at an auto parts store you should not have to spend the money on a dealer part. Good luck!!!

Napa should have the same hose as the dealer, as long as the vehicle is not to new. It has to be so old before the manufacturer will release the parts to the other retailers. But the should have it in stock. They will let you know if they do or not.

No. you can buy one aftermarket...Does not have to be OEM
if does not have wired bends it should be ok to buy a high pressure hose same inside diameter from home depot or lowes....( is much cheaper, they sell it by foot, you will have left over just in case it bust outs ( I put one on my semi truck, i needed 1 inch and 1/4, i found only 1 inch one, was a hell to put it back.... even thou was eated by the alternator belt a little, it is just fine.... will coast u a dollar. but make sure is it high pressure hose, that has inserts in it....
Ps:if it does have bends.... and u have no other option u might as well get a longer high heat pressure hose than the normal one...put a spring inside for the lenght of the hose (if smaller might be of, but u must have the spring where it bends..Find a stainless steel spring that will not corode....It should work....but if the nends are to tight....get an aftermarket coolant hose, or from napa, or from dealer.....

The octane rating (91, 89, 87.....) has to do with certain chemicals they put into the gas. Usually with finely tuned engines require the higher octane # because lower octane fuel combusts before it is supposed to, a.k.a "KNOCKING". If you use the lower octane and try to accelerate hard. The engine will make a KNOCKING sound, if this happens to much you will burn up the engine and have to have it rebuilt. You might get away with going down one grade if you don't start off like your at a drag strip but it's just best to stick with what the manual says to use.

Just make a test. Next time the tank is on E, put 5 gallons of Plus (89 octane) in there and see how it runs.

If you have a Land Rover with a V8 engine ( no, not the juice drink ) chances are it is a high compression engine therefore it will run better on a higher octane rating, say 91 or above. Usually if you treat the engine with a low octane rating, you will hear your valves tapping as a result of poor combustion. Hope this helps.

It's necessary to read the owners manual and put in what it says. That noise you hear when the octane is too low is parts of your engine hitting other parts of your engine.
The octane rating (91, 89, 87.....) has to do with certain chemicals they put into the gas. Usually with finely tuned engines require the higher octane # because lower octane fuel combusts before it is supposed to, a.k.a "KNOCKING". If you use the lower octane and try to accelerate hard. The engine will make a KNOCKING sound, if this happens to much you will burn up the engine and have to have it rebuilt. You might get away with going down one grade if you don't start off like your at a drag strip but it's just best to stick with what the manual says to use.

Just make a test. Next time the tank is on E, put 5 gallons of Plus (89 octane) in there and see how it runs.

If you have a Land Rover with a V8 engine ( no, not the juice drink ) chances are it is a high compression engine therefore it will run better on a higher octane rating, say 91 or above. How to fix 03 land rover discovery lifter knock?
Firstly, are you sure its the lifter/cam? It might be the rocker arms. Sound very similar. You can fix those by popping off the valve covers and cleaning the rocker shafts. Also, at the same time check if the lifters wiggle at all if you move them. If they do, tighten the rocker arms and see if the noise goes away. Doesn't need much -a half turn at a time, then start the engine to see if the noise diminishes.
If it is the lifter, you're in for a big job-you really need to replace them AND the cam - new lifters and dodgy old cam will kill those new lifters before you can say 'I wonder whether i should have replaced the cam at the same time'. Asking price for Navigator and Land Rover?
I've been trying to sell my 1999 Lincoln Navigator and my 1996 Land Rover Discovery for months now!! I know the auto market took a dip, but come on!! I listed my Navigator, with only 86,000miles, for $12,000 and the Rover, with 144,000 miles, for $4,000. They're beautiful suvs, what gives??

Even with all that the insurance for my first (and only) car, a 1997 land rover defender 90 300tdi with just 3 seats up front was a little under 拢800.
But if you like the car and know how to look after it, go for it. A landy can last you a lifetime and save you money long term. I do all my own repairs to it which saves alot in garage bills and I am currently converting it to biodiesel which will save even more.

The heat shield is bolted to the engine mount bracket. You may have to remove the exhaust downtube to get it all apart. This is secured with three nuts to the exhaust manifold. I'm going to tell you a few things here, and pay attention.
Get a look at it and see if you can weasel it out without disconnecting that exhaust tube. If it can be done, good on you, get to it. Likely as not, however, it is going to be a bear to accomplish.
So, if that is the case...
Order a set of exhaust studs for that side, as well as a set of replacement nuts. Also, order a new gasket for the mating surface. Order this from Atlantic British or the Rover dealer, do NOT get this stuff from the parts store.
Then, go to the parts store and pick up a can of Liquid Wrench, and a can of Seafoam DeepCreep spray. You DO need these things.
Determine what size the nuts on the exhaust flange are. There should be three of them. Make sure you have both a stubby and long box end wrench in that size. Make sure you have a ratchet, universal joint, and a couple of extensions that will fit in there, likely 3/8 inch drive. Make sure the socket you use is of good quality, and is a 6 point socket with one of the new surface drive designs.
SOAK the hardware with the Seafoam, and let it sit for no less than 6 hours. Then, and only then, attempt to remove it. If it won't budge, don't force it. Hit it with a load of the liquid wrench, and let it sit overnight.
The next day, come out and remove it.
You will thank the tool gods if you have a Gearwrench in the proper size for this job. It is worth the 15 bucks or so.
If you miss any of these points, you will destroy that hardware trying to remove it. Even if you do it all properly, you can still snap the studs off and round the nuts. That is why you MUST have them ahead of time. If it happens, you want to be ready to solve the problem that second, not in a week when the parts arrive.
I can't remember what size the nuts are, so you will have to check. Likewise, I can't remember if the heat shield will come ff without removing the downtube, but the 250 dollar factory workshop manual I got from the dealer suggests it is required.
If you find you do need to remove this downtube, follow ALL my suggestions. Do NOT try and save a buck and refrain from buying those studs and nuts. Even if you don't round the hardware, you need to replace it, so it doesn't fail in the future. Exhaust hardware should be considered disposable.
