Why did Land Rover get rid of their original SUV design? ?

I have been a Jeep owner for awhile, and wanted to get something tough but a little more classy. Naturally, my best option was to get a Land Rover (or Range Rover).... until I realized they only sell family type SUVs. Is Land Rover going to market a fun retro style SUV like Jeep? Seriously, I feel like these could compete with Jeep Wranglers in the United States. Why did Land Rover get rid of their original SUV design? ?
because noone was buying them. their 'defender' series was the bomb. it'd crush a wrangler or a hummer off road, but they were pricey and no more comfortable than an older wrangler, so noone bought them. Why did Land Rover get rid of their original SUV design? ?
The real reason other than price for Landrover not exporting the Defender, was safety and emissions standards. The Defender had a tough go meeting DOT safety and emissions. It's too bad, I am longing to see the Defender come back to the US with a Diesel and a 5 speed. I am getting tempted to export an older one...Why did Land Rover get rid of their original SUV design? ?
I'd dispute the second answer: The European crash testing %26amp; emission standards are far higher than in the US - In America, SUV's do not need to pass the crash tests that passenger cars do.

Land Rover Defenders now use the Ford 2.4 diesel engine %26amp; six speed gearbox, which meet Euro-IV emissions standards. They are good off road, but they are poorly made %26amp; pretty unreliable, but they are far superior to Jeep vehicles, which are sold in the UK.

If you're after a proper, well built off road vehicle, then Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser are generally accepted to be the best - next time you see a news report from a war zone, you'll see one of these. The UN don't want vehicles that break down.
