How do i remove the starter on a 1999 Land Rover Discovery?

There is a heat shaft or box around it. what tool do i use to remove the box?How do i remove the starter on a 1999 Land Rover Discovery?
The heat shield is bolted to the engine mount bracket. You may have to remove the exhaust downtube to get it all apart. This is secured with three nuts to the exhaust manifold. I'm going to tell you a few things here, and pay attention.



Get a look at it and see if you can weasel it out without disconnecting that exhaust tube. If it can be done, good on you, get to it. Likely as not, however, it is going to be a bear to accomplish.



So, if that is the case...



Order a set of exhaust studs for that side, as well as a set of replacement nuts. Also, order a new gasket for the mating surface. Order this from Atlantic British or the Rover dealer, do NOT get this stuff from the parts store.



Then, go to the parts store and pick up a can of Liquid Wrench, and a can of Seafoam DeepCreep spray. You DO need these things.



Determine what size the nuts on the exhaust flange are. There should be three of them. Make sure you have both a stubby and long box end wrench in that size. Make sure you have a ratchet, universal joint, and a couple of extensions that will fit in there, likely 3/8 inch drive. Make sure the socket you use is of good quality, and is a 6 point socket with one of the new surface drive designs.



SOAK the hardware with the Seafoam, and let it sit for no less than 6 hours. Then, and only then, attempt to remove it. If it won't budge, don't force it. Hit it with a load of the liquid wrench, and let it sit overnight.



The next day, come out and remove it.



You will thank the tool gods if you have a Gearwrench in the proper size for this job. It is worth the 15 bucks or so.



If you miss any of these points, you will destroy that hardware trying to remove it. Even if you do it all properly, you can still snap the studs off and round the nuts. That is why you MUST have them ahead of time. If it happens, you want to be ready to solve the problem that second, not in a week when the parts arrive.



I can't remember what size the nuts are, so you will have to check. Likewise, I can't remember if the heat shield will come ff without removing the downtube, but the 250 dollar factory workshop manual I got from the dealer suggests it is required.



If you find you do need to remove this downtube, follow ALL my suggestions. Do NOT try and save a buck and refrain from buying those studs and nuts. Even if you don't round the hardware, you need to replace it, so it doesn't fail in the future. Exhaust hardware should be considered disposable.



Recycle it if you are feeling green.
