For a sixteen year old they should have neither. But the best out of all of them is an Escalade.



The Land Rovers turn to junk after about 30k miles the air ride messes up on them and they make weird noises, Tahoes have problems with steering as they get older when you go to make a turn they like to nose dive on you and the steering is very loose.



Escalade by far is the best of the three you asked on.

nothing with a big engine look for something small like a hatchback for reliability go for a Japanese car like Honda civic but for looks a small French car like citron saxo or Peugeot 206 but the one I would really recommend is a vauxhall Corsa or an Astra. But if you want something more sporty you can corsa VXR, Astra VXR or a Honda civic Type R but these cars are expensive. Although you buy a vauxhall corsa or Astra with a turbo which will be more expensive regarding car insurance.
Withj gas prices running perilously close to $4 per gallon, now is not the time to be purchasing any of the vehicles you listed. There are so many cool vehicles out there that are more fuel-efficient, including Porshce Boxster and Corvette.

Being the fact that you are sixteen neither. These vehicles will make you look like you cannot live without your parents money. It also gives off the appearence of you being spoiled, selfish and immature, even if you are not. The "ladies" you are trying to attract will only like you for your parents money, and not you as a person. Get a Honda, have fun, and be young. You have the next 80 years to get tied down.
Don't listen to these guys. Land Rover is a great car. It is as reliable as any American brand, drives better and looks a thousand times more stylish. Moreover, due to their size, they are fairly safe. For a new driver, this would be a good car. It isn't made for speed.

For 16 years old you sure have a lot of money to waste. I have a Chevy Tahoe that I use for work and gas is costing me pretty close 600 a month. Chevy Tahoe, definitely. Land Rovers have horrible reliability and Escalades are gigantic. The Tahoe is the smallest of the three and will be easiest to park. Also, parts are probably cheaper for the Chevy as opposed to the British Land Rover and the Cadillac, even though the Cadillac is the same thing as a Suburban. Another thing to consider is that if you are parking this car at school, which is likely because it is for a 16 year old, you are likely to get numerous dings, dents, and scratches from other kids. Trust me, I have a Lexus Ls400 and park it at school and I have an almost solid white line of paint where the car next to me continually hits my car with its door. However, if you are trying to get a car to attract girls and look good to other people, an SUV is not the way to go because it is wasteful and excessive unless you are toting the whole family to school. I suggest a nice small car like a mid-90s Infiniti, any model year Lexus ES300, or a mid-90s BMW 3 series. The Tahoe is the best of the three. An Escalade is pretty much a Tahoe in a fine suit and the Rover will be in the shop more than on the road (d*** Brits). The Tahoe will be pretty inexpensive and is the most appropriate for a 16 year old (though in my opinion, an old Civic or Corolla are much more appropriate for someone who is 16), though it may not be the best of the three to pick up "females" in. the car only tows 3500 LBS., or about 1590 kg. Remember that the freelander is an AWD vehicle that uses FWD unless the tires lose grip, the rear tires will start to work, so the towing will be bad. The free lander is capable of pulling a one horse trailer, but it would struggle with a two horses on board in fact it could get stuck in a muddy field.

what you need at least is a range rover something with a bit of grunt, over at least 2.5 litre.

i will not tell you which you should buy.

but having said that i bought a toyota land cruiser which is 3 litre which states it will pull 3500kg.

and when a rice box with two big hunters in it, you need that sort of grunt to pull it.

No, the Freelander has a maximum towing capacity of 2500lb, I'd get a Land Rover Discovery instead, it has a maximum towing capacity of 8000lb and a built-in hitch receiver. That car was practically made for towing things around.

It has a check engine light, T/C (traction control) light, and a down hill descent light staying on, they've been on for several months but car running fine. We cleared the codes and the lights stayed off for a day then came back on but the car still ran fine. the next day it shut down completely in the road. Engine will still turn over but no ignition. You need to take it to a L/R dealer although Snap On kit is ok its no substitute for the L/R daignostic kit.

As stated before, Land Rovers are notoriously unreliable vehicles. I have also found them (Discovery models) to be uncomfortable.



I have always wondered why folks see Land Rover as a "luxury" brand, when the reality is actually quite the opposite. Discoverys are not cheap when new, and you can get a far better vehicle for the same price. And, as alluded to before, they sink like a rock in water when it comes to resale value.



So, if you REALLY want to keep your husband busy in the garage, get the Discovery.

If you end up buying a Discovery, don't buy a 2003. They had a high oil pump failure rate. Once the oil pump fails your engine is destroyed.

I have a 1996 Discovery with 181k miles and I cant think of a car that I would like more. I am trying to do most repairs by myself and in no way do i consider myself a mechanic however, if you do have any inclination on how to fix cars I would say go for it! easy repairs if you know what to do.

My father has owned 3 discoverys over the past decade.....they do not hold there value well but then again in todays market no car does as such......they are within the average bracket of fuel consumption but are gr8 offroad vehicles and the added seats in the boot offer an attractive possibility to carry 7 passengers in the 1 car......for my father he never had an unreliable expierince in the model you mentioned however his current 07 model did lose power steering requiring a garage stop.....Should I buy a used Land Rover Discovery?
they lost their value quickly because they were incredibly cheaply made. even when they left the factory, the glove box would open when the passenger door closed.



they're notoriously unreliable and incredibly slow. they were vastly improved during the mkIII generation (discovery 3, lr3) but the model you're looking at is cheap for a reason.



i'd recommend a toyota land cruiser or nissan pathfinder instead.
I would not recommend one. They are very costly to own. Reliability is a big issue with the Discovery and your husband will spend a lot of time working on it. Something similar that may still have status but be reliable would be a Toyota Land Cruiser. The land cruiser will run for more money but are much more reliable and much cheaper parts. Thanks

They are cheap because they are notoriously unreliable and guzzles gas. I'm surprised your mechanic husband hasn't told you this.



If you want a cheap SUV, get something like a Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Toyota 4-Runner or Nissan Pathfinder.

Lets start by referring to the Discovery as a Discovery, not a disco lol.



It all depends on what kind of a vehicle you are looking for. The Range Rover was designed to be an on-road SUV with off road capabilities in mind. The Land Rover however was designed purely for the trail adventuring enthusiast. If you're looking for comfortability and on road drivability the Range Rover "might" be better for you. Keep in mind both cars were designed to go off the road but the Range Rover was to appeal to the mass market more.

I was just in the market for an SUV myself and did extensive research. Im not sure what your budget is, but you can find alot of 2004 and newer with low mileage on them for under $14000. Look for models that have been around for at least 3 years- it gave the manufactuor time to fix glitches.



I ended up buying a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer LT with 42K on it for $12500. It is been really fun to drive, and since its a Chevy, if something does go wrong on it it won't be hard to repair and chances are I could do it myself.

The transfer case is behind the transmission. The filler plug is behind the hand brake drum on the side of the transfer case. You need a 1/2" drive ratchet to take the filler plug and drain plug out. The drain plug is at the bottom of the transfer case.

If you are trying to install a system from one discovery to another then you will be in for a long and unsuccessful adventure.



You will have more luck if you try and find a company that has aftermarket A/C systems for your particular vehicle and this way everything will be what is called a "drop in" system



There are many companies that offer this and I would suggest that you just goggle "aftermarket a/c kits".

In general, most are removed by pressing in a tiny (really tiny) pin, located about 2" back from whee the key goes in, and usually located on the opposite side so the driver will not see it....crawl under the wheel and look for a hole about 1/8" in dia....put a small drill bit or maybe a phillips screwdriver...a real small one...in and push, and extract the cylinder by tugging on it.

the Rav4 isn't worth owning without the V6 engine.



the CRV is gets good mpg but is underpowered and not for off road.



so if you need a real 4wd drive buy the Toyota, if your want good mpg, are not in a hurry and stay on the pavement the Crv is best.



don't buy a Jaguar, Range/Land Rover or an Audi ever.



one thing about the rav4 the spare tire on the back is a hazard, if you get bumped from behind the rear window will shatter, and the rear tail gate swings out instead of up that's very awkward.

If you even consider reliability at all, forget about the Freelander. RAVs and CRVs are both good, but for those years, I'd go with the 2002-2003 Honda CR-V. The 2000- 2001 CR-Vs are great as well, but the 2002 redesign made it better. The RAV4s for all of those years has one sore spot: They are small in the back seat area. The 2000- 2003 CR-V weill give you more room. If you desire more power than the 4 cylinder RAV4 or CR-V, consider the 2002-2003 Ford Escape V6. It's pretty reliable and offers a very powerful V6. Still the RAV4 and CR-V are the most reliable of all the small-utes.

If the charger has a device where you can select which radio station it's on, make sure it's one that doesn't have any reception from a radio station, and make the radio in your car match. If it doesn't have a place the adjust the radio, then I believe it's just a charger. So, either the buzzing or silence means that the radio stations don't match on your car and the device, the radio station already has reception from a station, or it's not meant to play music, just charge. Since Babson is 14 miles away from Boston, Im going to need a car, prefebably a truck, with a 4x4 drive(a must), since the T is too far away from Babson, and the commuter trail does not run enough.



Im looking at a Land Rover Discovery, because its a good car, especially for the snow.

Im limited in budget, but I have found few choices in Miami, at the right price.

Some car makers offer All Wheel Drive (its really similar to 4x4) on their sedans. I know that Audi offers AWD on all of their sedans and Volvo offers it on most of their sedans. I dont know if Volvo started offering AWD on their sedans in the past, but I know you can find a 00-05 Audi sedan with AWD. Infiniti has AWD on their G35 sedan. (i think they started offering it on their 04 model and they call a G35 with AWD a G x35)

Land rovers are not renowned for being robust or cost effective to maintain, neither is the Cherokee for that matter. I know it sucks, but a Ford Explorer 4x4 may be a more prudent choice. Certainly a more cost effective solution.

Or, if you really want to live far from campus, so you have a long commute, have to drive, and have to drive through deep snow, buy any four wheel drive. You don't need a big gas guzzling SUV, especially since you seem to imply that you'll be commuting alone.



Also, you're from Florida and have probably never driven in the snow. Learn how. It's not the same as driving on dry or even wet roads.

I had my Discovery for three years now I've lived in upstate New York and Chicago where it snows a lot. LRs are very reliable in snow, never had a problem with snow storms , maintenance is free with warranty,excellent roadside assistance. But if you have a limited budget it's not a good idea...But if you're buying one, get a quote over at Paramus, New Jersey because alot of imported cars are being shipped to NJ port first .That's where I got mine, cheaper by 5grand...

I splurged this week and put premium in it, and it seems to run a good deal smoother and I got a whopping 16 mpg in the city (16 is really good for those of you who are non-Disco owners).

If it says premium recommended, then you can use any gas.



If it does not say anything, then you can use any gas.

If it's the former, I'd say no. A driving age teen has plenty of other big expenses coming their way. Not only are you looking at 15-18K for the car itself, but insurance, maintenance and fuel costs will be high. Something older and smaller will be a better value (believe me, gas prices will go back up again), and there are plenty of cars that perform well and have decent safety ratings.



It's great that the teen is cautious and doesn't use alcohol or other drugs. However, the problem is lack of experience. Unless said teen started driving at 8 years old, they just haven't been exposed to enough different situations on the road, and superior handling is only helpful if the driver knows from long experience exactly what to do.



If someone in the family already has the range rover- the teen will probably wind up driving it eventually.

i don't even want to know why you want to know the answer to this question!!! but use logic. i'd guess you are not worried about wear and tear on the vehicle. normally you can only tow about a ton safely with no damage, but i've towed 9.5 tons about 50 miles and had no noticeable damage. so i'd worry less about the number of people and try to figure out how you would stop the budies from being torn to shreds too quickly, as pain and suffering seem to be the goal. might i recommend a parachute harness with 3/8" quick links?!!

Regarding the door mirrors dipping up, it's a software issue with the seats memory module. Land Rover claims that you can sometimes resolve it by reprogramming the position of the mirrors and saving it in the module. From what I recall, this procedure worked for some, but for others the problem returned after a few days and the seat ECU eventually needed to be replaced, under warranty if you are still covered. Customer Issue: Reverse gear mirror settings are required to be stored (as detailed in the owners handbook) if customers are reporting issues with exterior mirrors 'dipping' upwards instead of downwards.



Cause: A software issue in the latest Memory ECU YWC500690 has been identified.



The following conditions may lead to mirrors 'dipping' upwards:

- The customer does NOT actively program the new mirror dip settings (as detailed in the owner's handbook %26amp; below)

- The vehicle is left parked in reverse gear and the key ID is changed (by unlocking the vehicle with another key) - next time reverse gear is selected mirrors 'dip' in an upward direction



Action: This issue may be resolved by actively learning mirror dip positions as follows:



Key 1 (Refer to illustration 1 in attachment)

- Turn Ignition ON (position II).

- Press memory switch '1' button (Figure 2).

- Select Reverse Gear (mirrors move to 'default' dip position).

- Move mirrors to required dipped position for Key 1 %26amp; Memory 1.

- Press memory switch 'MEM' button (Figure 1) followed by switch '1' button (Figure 2) within 5 seconds. 'DOOR MIRROR DIP STORED' will be displayed on the message center together with a single chime. This is confirmation that the dipped position is stored.

I owned an LR3 and traded it in after 11,000 miles. It was a mechanical nightmare! I got the HSE in White which looked really good and I needed the car because of its snow capabilities. In the snow around 10:00 pm, I was driving and the dash board had a blackout. It was probably the most dangerous driving conditions I have ever been in. The dealer gave me a $700 repair bill after that. The dealer would not even alert when the car had a recall and believe me, it's had many, even seat belts! At around 8,000 miles, the car had a blowout on the highway and stability control didn't even kick in. At around 11,000 miles, the dealer told me that I would need to spend $1000 to repair a broken sunroof motor. I drove down to the dealer in my Toyota Corolla rental car which I think I have driven more than my Land Rover and picked up my truck and went straight to the BMW Dealer to get an X5. Now with 15,000 miles on my Bimmer, I have had ZERO issues and it preforms just as well in the snow and adds performance with it. Believe me, this car is ranked the most unreliable in the US for a reason. Also, I just passed the local BMW Dealer where I got the X5 from and the Land Rover is still there for sale.Could someone that owns a Land Rover LR3 share his/her opinion about the vehicle?

for that car you could only fit a single din.
Land Rover DIIs use single din receivers, The faceplate is just a little larger, but normal aftermarket units fit well. The faceplate is larger on the stock unit to allow easy operation of the controls with gloves on.



Before you do what you are about to do, though, know that the car came with one heck of a system from the factory. It is going to be hard to beat, without spending loads of cash.



If your vehicle didn't come with the 1.5 din faceplate, you need nothing else. If your vehicle has the taller faceplate, you don't NEED anything, but the dealer sells a trim piece that goes under an aftermarket unit that cleans up the look a bit.

Can anyone advise me to what the problem maybe? The heating system is not warming up (however it did come on for a short time the other day) The hand break sign on the dash display is permenantely on and i dont know if this is just a coincidence or if there is a electrical problem or if its the thermostat thats packed in. new thermostat and free up the switch on your handbrake it is stuck.LPG is a dirty gas to burn and generates a lot of water vapour ,the carburation system can get blocked with a grey grease like sediment generated by the lpg.its ok to use if you get it for nothing working for BOC,AIR PRODUCTS OR CALOR.You can test the thermostat in a bucket of water.
Carburation on a '96 V8? its injected! and you should still check your brake fluid levels to be on the safe side.

Probably the stat stuck open - you can always tell if the radiator top hose starts to get warm as soon as the engine is started - just need a replacement.

Sounds like the handbrake switch located under or in front of the handbrake lever is faulty. The heater problem could be several things, first the control for the heater may have become disconnected, second its possible that the heater control valve has blocked up with dirt/rust, third the thermostat in the engine is faulty.

its always hard to tell for sure..but l would say coincidence....it could be that the themostat need replacing....clever bit of kit it sits in the water flow and has a wax filled inside...it is normally closed so that from start up the water circulates slowly and so the engine warms up quicker, as the wax melts in the heated water it allows the valve to open and full circulation starts ...to your heater as well..but if its stuck....well the rest is plain...no circulation =no heat.they cost pennies and are available from any decent car outlet...as regards the light on....i would just sit in the car and have a few goes on the handbrake..it sounds like the switch is stuck....or maybe its failed either way it should not be too much dosh...providing your brakes are ok.....not smelling like three day old fish when you get out???? if they are then get em checked...if not then it should be ok to drive....

Cheapest and easiest thing to do is check your coolant level. We tend to forget in the winter because with cooler temps, engine overheating isn't as prevalent. But the coolant runs the heat as well- make sure it is full. If it's not, you will only get spotty heat at best.



You can also check the thermostat- as if it is malfunctioning it may not be opening enough to allow the heater core to warm up.

I already asked when I bought mine and it came with two keys. And the repo man has one too. There around or more than 50.00 bucks! It's simple, they are the best, and if you actually LISTEN, they do explain why! Proper ground-clearances, proper 4WD systems, suspension and tyres designed for, and proven if off-road use - not big Tonka-Toys like the absurd BMW X5 which gets its' wheels spinning on damp grass!

Land-Rovers and Range-Rovers were made to do the dirty-work, and you can ALSO use them on the road - all these other "soft-roaders" are styled like them, but meant for the road, not the dirty-work.

Because Land Rover produce real 4x4's you cant go off road in an X5, they are built for motorways. Otherwise your only option is say a Land cruiser, but they are not as luxurious as a Range Rover or a Discovery

pull the panel off the back door and lubricate the door mechanism and all the linkage for the door ,that may help it to open better,they get a certain amount of water in them and that will cause this too happen,good luck with it.
Freelanders are a poor imitation of a land rover plagued with many problems and now made by the Ford motor company, Ford electrics have never been that good. It may be a fault with the Body Electrical Control Module (BeCM), when water gets in the seals it can affect the units operation,

It would be a good idea to take your car to a specialist car electrics garage, rather than a dealer, as this sort of fault seems common. The control units don't appear to be cheap though but a new one will hopefully sort the problem.

If you like off roading why not get a proper British land rover built in the 60's or 70's, built properly and seem to go on forever, very nice with a front winch for sheer climbs!

the freelander has only one fault.....THE MANUFACTURER.nice car-nasty build quality
there will be a wiring fault in the rear door ,it is from the window mechanism rubbing on the wires inside the door when you operate it up + down. remove the panel an inspect the wires .rejoin any that are broken and re insulate any that have been damaged using quality electrical tape .re secure the wiring out of the way of the window mechanism to prevent it happening again.
They just seem to have this glitch, have you had the rear window winding down by itself yet?!

Anyways if you so deeply want a H1 hummer then why don't you buy one. A good used one is about $30,000. Beat up ones are $20,000. You also can find Humvee's used by the military for about 12 to 15K. But good luck fighting the DMV to make it street legal. They hate thoughs. Just saying man because if you asked me I would say thoughs land rovers are pieces of junks being $50k +.

I agree, add injector cleaner and take it for a good hammering, foot hard down in third for several miles to clear the cobwebs usually does the trick - you'll see the crud flying out of the exhaust. Not a bad idea from time to time anyway, MoT or no MoT, especially if you're normally quite a gentle driver.

A good practice is to add one bottle of injector cleaner to half a tank of fuel (or two to a full tank), and then give the jeep a good blast up and down a dual carriageway at high revs, but not in the red, which will clean out the injectors. DON'T do as a couple of people have advised and drive it flat out foot to the boards, or as one person says, thrash it to within an inch of its life. That, as any half decent mechanic well knows, will DAMAGE THE ENGINE!!! Come on people, lets have some sensible answers, this is someones car we're talking about here and your advice could well lead to a blown head gasket or worse.



Some other little tricks to lowering the emissions are as follows:- Clean out the breathers, fit a new air filter, and if you're feeling brave you could even whip the EGR valve off and give it a good clean out to ensure it closes fully, but thats just if you're feeling up to a bit of spannering!

yes there are a number of things that can be doneor added to the fuel system.stick with the well known brands,have 10/20 ltrs inthe tank add the stuff and go for an mot when the engine is hot.
the best way is to add FORTE fuel conditioner ,it comes in a tin for about 拢10 ,pour it in the fuel filter and let engine run for about 15 mins ,it cleans the whole fuel system and reduces emissions and excess smoke .it works 99 out of 100 times ,its magic stuff...

Alot of the big performance exhaust companys sell custom parts so you could buy the sections of tubing and the boxes then get a garage to weld it all together for you. Or just buy the boxes then look for a company on the internet to mandrel bend some stainless steel tubing to your specifications.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Stainless steel will give you a nicer sound and the boxes themselves can be straight through.. They're just perforated and wrapped in sound deadening material to keep things to a legal volume. my dad had an LR2 2 years back. the car is perfect for the first few years, but when you get past like 5 years with the car, everything goes downhill. he had major mechanical problems right after about 60,000 miles. things began to rattle and shake in the car and there were constant leaks coming from under the car. im not sure on full details, but it was the the extent that he just gave up and got a new acura RX SUV. i love the new acura, you can get them for the price of a used land rover and they last forever! my mom has had her TL for 8 years, no problems!

Having been in the 'Land Rover zone' in the UK for afew years, i can give you some advice.



Is it a v8 or desiel? your looking at around 18mpg for v8 and 27mpg for desiel, maybe a little more if its an automatic (more likely, automatics were more common). Oh sorry thats uk gallon, which is 1.2 us gallon.



Being an SE, it will have afew air bags, traction control and ABS. The latter two very important for a vehicle this size. Very hard to stop these things, but you'll be safe if there is a bump. Might be abit more rocky for the 2 rear seats though. They do have a good safety rating, and the anti roll bars will help on a side on collisions, as are the side protection bars in the doors and body work.,



Reliability, It should have all its dealer stamps for any major modifications. If its manual transmission check for wear in the gear box, rattling in neutral, popping out of gears, if its automatic, no worries, the ZF boxes are bomb proof so long as its oil is changed regulally. Check if the gearbox will change to low range too, might be abit stiff if not used alot but its a handy feature if you get stuck or are towing something. If its a desiel, the injector harness can get oil in it, bit of a pain but easy fix. The petrol engines were pretty good, again regular oil changes to keep them top running. If it has air suspension at the back, check it rises and lowers smoothly, and that it doesnt keep the compressor on all the time. Also if it leans to one side at the back, that means a bags gone, or a valve is leaking.



Generally, as long as there serviced regulally, they are good cars. Strong sturdy and will last a very long time with some punishment.

Complete with calipers I would guess around the 180-220kg mark, but could be a way off the mark. There is no "integrated telephone" on the LR3 (that is, a phone that is already installed in the car). You must provide your own telephone. There is an option for PERSONAL telephone integration (PTI), which many 2006 LR3s have. First, you need to determine if you have PTI. You say you have an SE, but you didn't say if you had a V6 or a V8... those are two very different models. A 2006 V6 could not have PTI as an option, but the button would still be there on the radio. Here are the ways to figure out if you have PTI:

1)You can look on your original window sticker.

2)You can look on your steering wheel and see if there are two buttons, a red telephone and a green telephone, mounted to the right underside of the base of the wheel.

3) If you do not have navigation, you can look on your roof and see if you have a "shark fin" antenna.

4) You can give your VIN# to any LR retailer, and they will be able to tell you.

If you DO have PTI, you will need a bluetooth enabled cell phone. Turn bluetooth on on your phone. Turn your radio on in your LR3. Go through whatever steps needed on your phone to add a new bluetooth device (This is phone specific, not vehicle specific). When it asks you for the passcode, enter 2121. Then connect. Then you will have a functioning phone in your LR3. This will mute the stereo when a phone call comes in, displaying the number on the radio bezel and instrument cluster. Simply pull the green phone button towards you to speak.

It should idle over 1200 RPM cold and then down to 750 RPM hot. Maybe you have a bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that tells the computer how hot or cold your engine coolant is. If the sensor is saying your coolant is hot when you cold start the engine, then the mixture will be too lean causing the rough idle. Of course you first need to have all your standard "tune-up" items checked as well.

There is no dipstick, the system is sealed. You have to remove the plug on the transmission to check it. This is generally best accomplished at a shop, where you can pay someone else to endure the pain in the butt that it is.



If you want to do it yourself, just find the top plug and remove it, but I'm warning you, it really is a pain.



I'll usually do it myself if I'm under there anyway doing other things, but if that's all I need done, I let someone else get dirty. It isn't worth the hassle when you consider that it isn't expensive at all to have her up on a lift where you can watch some other bugger curse about it.
